One house, a thousand feelings...
On the day of her grandmother's funeral, Emiko doesn't feel like herself. In fact, she doesn't feel like anyone, really.
But little did she know that when she fell asleep, she would wake up in The Night House, a magical place where feelings come to life. As Emiko navigates her way back home, she must face the feelings she thought she didn't have and learn that love and loss are just two sides of the same coin.
A helpful, yet playful journey through navigating the feelings associated with grief. Perfect for families navigating loss together. -
The first funeral I ever went to was for my grandpa on my mom’s side of the family. He was always sweet and kind to me, but I still felt a whirlwind of emotions. Nobody really asked how I was feeling, and to be honest, I didn’t really know myself. I knew I was sad, but I also felt angry, scared, and when I thought about the good times, happy.
I didn’t know it was acceptable to show different emotions than sad, so that’s what I portrayed externally, sadness.
These days, my nieces and nephews read books that truly cover emotions and self-regulating those feelings. It’s a level of emotional mastery that I didn’t even touch upon until entering therapy in my early 30s.
While there are some great resources for dealing with death and funerals as a kid, I wanted to write something that spoke to my experiences as well. After several months, it’s finally done.
Emiko and the Night House is about one young girl’s journey through the magical “Night House” where she learns the only way out is to explore how she feels within.
